Hi, I’m Hugo von der Thüsen
I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Transportation, Infrastructure and Logistics at Delft University of Technology where I also obtained my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. I have always had an interest in public transportation and urbanism and by how we can efficiently move people around our cities while keeping them pleasant and livable. Alongside my studies I have been involved in various extracurricular activities, including serving the faculty’s student council and sustainability team, holding a board position, and participating in numerous committees.

Bio
In my childhood I lived in Haarlem, London and Den Haag and pursued many hobbies, the main one being singing in a classical choir. I had always had a fascination with trains, construction zones and buses, to the point where I wanted to become the person who puts up the signs and tape to cordon off construction sites. This turned out to be quite close to the truth as I started studying Civil Engineering at TU Delft which I completed in 2024 with my Bachelor’s thesis on the effects of bus stop relocation in rural Dutch villages. During my bachelor period I was a member of my study association with over 2000 members where we organised symposiums, career events, sports days, freshmen weekends and much more. After being on committees for 4 years I decided to join the board full time for one year. My function as treasurer saw me oversee the finances of the association, manage the accounts and administration, and bear the responsibility together with my six fellow board members. This was an extremely valuable year for me as I learnt a lot of soft skills and was able to make mistakes and learn from them whilst also bearing the responsibility for all the actions.
After my board year I completed my degree and started on my master’s degree at the same faculty. Transportation, Infrastructure and Logistics was a no-brainer and I have been enjoying it immensely so far. I chose the transportation networks track which focusses on network design, supply and demand, travel behaviour and more. I will write my thesis in the first half of 2026 and should graduate in the summer of 2026. After that? Who knows!

Websites I like and I think you should visit
www.urbanrail.net
My favourite website of all time, it’s even in my bookmarks bar. An up to date map database of all urban rail networks in the world (trams, light-rail, metro, monorail and regional rail). Updated every time an extension opens, a stop closes down or another Chinese city opens their 20th metro line in a year. Most systems also have images and some information.
